Chapter 1

"Rogue, cover me from the back." My best friend Max said to me. I quickly dropped back in the crowd of wolves in a steady jog behind her. We were chasing an injured buffalo down in the middle of a huge field. Me and my pack, that is. I was with the third section; we had split into three at the last fork in the path. We were chasing directly after the animal, the other two groups were flanking us just in case he managed to escape, which wasn't very likely.
"Male or female?" I barked in her direction.
"It's definitely a male." She said. I took in deeper breaths and ran a little faster, nudging her forward. Males were a little bigger than females, but had a LOT more muscle, which meant more meat. Now, I bet your wondering why I'm talking about 'Running with a pack'.
Well, not to scare you, but I'm a werewolf. Now don't go thinking, 'Oh, a werewolf is just a really hairy person that looks like a dog' like all those stupid movies and stuff. No, werewolves are normal people who can change into wolves on command. Or so I thought until that embarrassing moment two days ago. Now I guess I have to tell you. Well, I was talking to Max in our lovely school, Sento Junior High, when the one kid I actually liked (Hunter Mavery, aka hottest guy in school and direct relative of the original werewolves) came up to us to ask for our third period homework. I had stumbled on my words and acted like a complete idiot right in front of him. My face started getting red and my palms were sweaty, so I nudged Max for a little help. She of course helped him (like the good friend she usually was) with the homework as I had failed to do, and we walked away. Since it was after school and we were going home together, we weren't really in a rush. But we only walked about halfway down the hallway before I completely lost it.
"WHY DID I DO THAT?! I'M SUCH AN IDIOT!!!" I had screamed at myself. Max had just looked on at me with her bright green eyes, patiently waiting for me to calm down. As I had expected, though, it didn't subside as quickly as I thought it had. I yelled a little more until I felt something weird near my lower back. Max's eyes got wide and she quickly pushed me into the nearest room, which happened to be a janitor's closet.
"WHAT?!" I screamed at her as I struggled to get up again.
"You over worked yourself and your tail popped out." She said, pointing to my long black and white tail that was now thrashing wildly. My breath had caught in my throat as I watched it knock over a broom with a loud thud.
"But, wait what?" I was seriously confused now.
"Oh, I forgot to tell you." She said. "Sometimes if you get too excited, angry, embarrassed or scared, some of your wolf features might pop up." My mouth dropped open.
"Shouldn't that have been on of the first things you told me?!" I had whisper yelled.
"Oh, and if you haven't already noticed, you still have some wolf instincts as a human, but that's because your 61% wolf now." That was when I had slapped my forehead. As I snapped back to reality, I stumbled over my paw a little, gently nudging to wolf next to me.
"Watch it, Rogue!" he growled to me.
"Sorry!" I whined back. We were surrounding the pray now, and a couple of the wolves nipped its nose and rear end a little, making it trip and fall onto its side like a dead tree. I noticed that it kicked some wolves in the process, but no one would care if they got up or not until after the meal. The buffalo didn't even try to get up. It just laid there, sides heaving, waiting for death to arrive. If I wasn't a starving wolf, I might have felt bad for it. But I just happened to be one on this very day, and no one was getting any sympathy from me for a while longer.
I flicked my eyes over to the alpha female (The alpha male was at home studying tonight, the alpha female was his girlfriend, Molly) and waited for the attack signal along with everyone else. As we did, there was a slight silence. An awkward silence, as you might call it. It was very rare for the animal to just give up without loosing at least half the blood in their bodies first. Then, she flicked her tail just the slightest bit. And we attacked, making sure the kill was clean. When we were all sure it was dead and gone, we backed up slowly to make room for Molly. As a pack rule, the alphas always ate first, and we all respected that.
I watched her with hungry eyes as she stepped forward boldly and took the first bite of the kill, but couldn't miss the loneliness in her eyes. This was her first time eating without Hunter (yes, the guy I still have a crush on) and she probably felt a little nervous. Without the alpha male, the alpha female would most likely feel very vulnerable, but the pack respected her, and would even dream of hurting such an innocent person.
She knew that, but wasn't willing to accept it yet. But she'd learn soon enough. She had to, anyway. When she finished, she backed away slowly, muzzle covered in blood. She didn't even have to give a sign. We just dived in. All at once, we tore into the flesh of the animal, splashing blood every where. The only place left alone was the head, because there was barely any meat. But we did save the bones for gnawing. I chose my bone from its front left leg and trotted over to Max, full and happy.
After the hunt, we usually sat in a big group, talked a little, and finished gnawing our bones. Truth be told, no one really knew why werewolves existed, but they did know that if they didn't hunt, they would slowly but surely turn more and more dog like, until they were completely wolf forever. So to prevent that, the pack had a hunt once every full moon, which was about a month. Actually, the area we hunted in was a decent little section of Yellowstone National Park. People came and did their 'wolf watching' and in return, we don't kill them. This place was great for our hunting, as long as the McGillen pack stayed on their territory. We didn't worry much about that though, because we didn't let them off easy the first time they showed up.
Also, the people have been calling our pack the "Moon Pack" because we only come on full moons. At this moment in thinking this out for you like I will do oh so often (you're welcome by the way), I looked at the humans. All they looked like now were big sacks of meat, but somewhere in that crowd of people watching us was my dad. You see, my dad studied wolves and researched them for a living while my mom ran a little jewelry shop on the west side of Stone Street, Wyoming. It wasn't big, but it made enough money to get us by.
We lived in that little building almost all our lives, and weren't planning on moving anytime soon. Right now I was exited to go back to that house. It was around midnight, and my mom thought I was in bed. Thank god she knew that I always locked the door. I turned to leave, but a heavy male stopped me. He looked like he might be that kid Jake from school, but just in case I decided not to ask. He had that look in his eye that said perfectly clearly, 'Don't talk back to me, or you'll be really sorry'.
"Where are you going, little missy?" He growled. I stood my ground, in case I had to brace for the worst.
"We haven't howled yet. We have to howl first." He said through a whine, as though I hurt him for forgetting.
"Oh, right. I-I forgot, sorry!" I barked weakly as I turned tail and fled back to the pack. God, I didn't like that guy at all. I found Max eventually in the thick crowd of wolves, and sat next to her. Then we both looked to Molly again. She waited for everyone to quiet down with unblinking eyes. Then she took a deep breath, tilted her head up as high as she could, and gave a powerful howl. We all listened in awe for a few seconds before joining in. I didn't have to strain my ears to hear all the people gasp.
I listened closely to the sweet sound whistling through the air. This time it was a song of peace and happiness, and you didn't have to speak wolf to see that. When we finished, Molly walked away, apparently towards her house. The rest of us just nodded to each other goodbye and split in different directions. I headed southwest, glancing side to side every now and then to see if anyone was running in the same direction. You had to run home fast enough not to be followed by any humans after a pack meet or else someone might just figure out your furry little secret.
I ran all the way home and stopped near the house to catch my breath. I did kind find it kind of funny, though, that a car passing by scared the living stuffing out of me. And I'm a wolf. I snuck to the back of the house and turned back into a human. Just in case you're curious, transforming isn't really that interesting. Well, not for me. It just looks like a wolf turning into a human. No big deal. I felt my long, wavy, black hair float down onto my shoulders. I staggered a little as I took a step forward, but caught my balance by hanging onto a nearby bush. Then I quickly ran to the back door and opened it with a key I always kept on a necklace around my neck. I quietly crept in and tip-toed up to my room, but stopped myself when I got to my bed.
First I had to take shower, I smelled like the woods, and it did not smell like just pine. I walked over to my wardrobe and picked out my fuzzy puppy dog pajamas. After picking out some other stuff, I walked to the bathroom and put them on a stool. I took a quick shower and stumbled back to my room again, eyes half closed. As I walked over to my bed again, I completely collapsed in the soft blankets. It was probably around one in the morning now, and I still had to get through Friday. I sighed and closed my eyes, thinking back to the day I turned into a werewolf. It was only a month and a half ago. I was wolf watching with my dad, and he told me to go get the extra pair of binoculars in the car, because he had cracked the lenses in his.
As I walked to the parking lot and unlocked the door to our little blue jeep, I didn't notice the black wolf taking a steady trot behind me. He sat down quietly and waited patiently for me to turn. When I did, I gave a little shriek. No one was in the parking lot but me and the wolf. They were all watching the Moon Pack. Figures, right? The wolf approached me calmly and I backed up against the jeep step by step, terrified. The black wolf looked almost ghostly in the night, its blue eyes mysterious and vague.
"You have been chosen to join the ranks of the wolves. Prepare for your first transformation." At first I had laughed, thinking I was hallucinating. I mean, how often did a wolf come and tell you, in your own tongue, to 'join the ranks of the wolves'. I'm guessing never. And if you did, I suggest you go see a therapist ASAP (no offense).
"Why would you pick me, though? I'm sure there are tons of other kids who would want to do that." I asked curiously, thinking that maybe I was in another yet weird dream and in real life I was passed out in the parking lot. The wolf just smirked.
"Because, you have what it takes. Your spirit is great for helping your pack, and your courage is needed to go after animals three times your size." I smiled.
"And what if I don't agree?" The wolf's eyes gave a glint of amusement, before he leaped at me. He knocked me over and I blacked out. When I woke up, I was floating in the middle of no where. There were pretty little star like things floating around me, too. Suddenly, a wolf appeared in front of me. It looked like me (in wolf form of course), and I looked deep into its eyes. All I saw was my self looking back at me. When I woke up again, I was lying in the parking lot as a wolf, and Max was there instead. But the catch was that she was a wolf too.
See, I never knew she was a werewolf. But instead of yelling at her like I usually would, I just accepted it and listened to what she had to say with a gulp. When she saw that I was inviting her to speak, she explained everything to me. Then, only a few minutes later, we- I woke up startled as my alarm clock went off. Seven o'clock in the morning. I guess I fell asleep thinking that out for you, since you were probably curious anyway. I know I would have been. But, I guess its back to reality. And school.
I started this book not long ago, and decided to post it. It's about a werewolf girl. Enjoy!
